Brentwood Named Safest City in Tennessee By Safety Group

A national trade organization dedicated to home safety and security has just issued a report that names Brentwood the safest city in Tennessee for 2018.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security says it compiles its reports based on the FBI crime statistics, as well as its “own population data and internal research.”

Brentwood makes number one on the list due largely to its low incidence of both violent and property crimes. According to the FBI’s 2016 Crime in the United States report—the latest such report available and the basis for the council’s FBI data—Brentwood experienced 25 violent crimes and 397 property crimes in the period surveyed.

For a city with a population of 42,379, according to the report, those numbers are far below the national and state averages.

To be more specific, the Brentwood numbers come out to a rate of .58 violent crimes per 1,000 inhabitants and 9.29 property crimes per 1,000 inhabitants. The state average is 9.45 violent crimes and 39.33 property crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, according to the report.

The second safest city in the state is also in Williamson County. Spring Hill had a violent crime rate of 1.91 per 1,000 inhabitants and a property crime rate of 8.32 per 1,000 inhabitants.

Franklin is just a few more spots down the list at number eight. Nashville is ranked 37th.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security laid out some of its criteria for inclusion on the list on its website.

Only cities with at least 10,000 inhabitants who provided complete crime statistics to the FBI were considered.

When it came to actually weighing the various statistics, the council also had a system in place. Violent crimes were weighted one-and-a-half times more than property crimes when making the list.

If the list gives Brentwood a reason to celebrate, it gives other cities a reason to frown.

At the bottom of the list, in 53rd place is Athens, Tennessee. Athens had a violent crime rate of 9.99 per 1,000 inhabitants and a property crime rate of 77.86 per 1,000 inhabitants. Dyersburg and Memphis were the two other lowest-ranking cities on the list.

Here is a rundown of the National Council for Home Safety and Security top 10 safest cities for 2018:
