Get Your Kids Involved in the Moving Process

Moving from one home to another can be difficult for children, especially if you’re moving far away from your current home. It means leaving the comfort of their school and moving away from their friends. Understanding what they’re going through and making it easier for them is important.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to make this transition a bit smoother for the little ones in your home as your family adjusts to their new home and neighborhood.

Get Their Opinions
While the adults in the family are going to make the decision as to which house to buy, ask your kids what they think of the homes you’re looking at. You may not want to take them to every open house you go to, but when you see something you like, bring them there and get their input.

Visit Schools
Once you’ve made the decision to move to a neighborhood, schedule an appointment for your kids to visit their new schools. They will likely be given a tour where they get to explore the building and learn about everything the school offers, from classes to sports teams, theater and other activities.

Get Them Involved
Make sure your kids keep up with their favorite activities after you move. Find out about your new area’s Little League and youth sports teams. If your kids are into music or theater, look into local performing arts schools. And if art is their thing, look for studios that give lessons.

Have Them Decorate Their Room
Let your kids choose the color of the walls in their bedroom. Also let them pick out cool posters and wall art to hang on their walls. Include photos of their friends from your old school so that they keep those connections.

Find Things to Do
Take the family out to discover your new neighborhood’s parks, stores, movie theaters and restaurants. If there is an eatery or destination your children particularly like, be sure to go there regularly.
